Job Description:

The Product Integration Group of L3Harris in Rochester, New York, is looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician. This position will perform a variety of operations including the assembly & integration of complex electromechanical and opto-mechanical airborne hardware within tight tolerances. This role involves working directly with design and manufacturing engineers on the development of new and existing products to optimize design and build for manufacturability.

Essential Functions:

  • Candidate would perform a variety of duties in the newly formed Airborne area working with Engineering to a ssemble, disassemble, integrate, troubleshoot and test highly stabilized electro-optical/infrared sub-assemblies and imaging systems with established procedures.

  • Work scope is inclusive of but not limited to the assembly, repair, and test of Opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical sub-assemblies.

  • Fit, align, and assemble components, and measure tooling assembly for conformance to specifications, using precision measuring and checking instruments.

  • Candidate will be asked to work from schematics, operating or repair manuals, engineering drawings and written or verbal instructions. May work with complex machines or computer systems. Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format. Performs calibration and alignment checks; adjusts, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions.

  • Follows internal processes to ensure proper conformance to established policies and procedures.

  • Works with Manufacturing Engineering to develop/maintain documentation.

  • Streamlines existing assembly/integration processes by collaborating with Manufacturing Engineering to analyze current processes; presents recommendations for improvement.

  • Follows safety procedures and practices.

  • Candidate requires communication skills both written and verbal with a cross functional team to report on daily status, issues, roadblocks, concerns etc.

    Qualifications:

  • High School degree and a minimum of 4 years' of prior experience, Associates degree in related field with 0-2 years’ experience, military electronic or optical technical training, 4-year apprenticeship, Toolmaker or Industrial/Maintenance machinist experience.

  • Fixture or machining experience in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace or process fixture field preferred.

  • Experience in manufacturing and/or prototyping environment.

  • Aerospace or Defense industry experience

  • Lean Manufacturing practices.

  • Experience in a Mechanical or Optical discipline.

  • Ability to obtain a clearance.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

    Competencies:

  • Fixture or machining experience in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace or process fixture field preferred.

  • Proficient in J-STD-001 and 7711/21 soldering standards.

  • Acute attention to detail.

  • Airborne- Gimbal/ Turret experience.

  • Able to work successfully both independently and in a team environment.

  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.

  • Able to work in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment without sacrificing quality.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Able to logically address, analyze and resolve problems.

  • Must be able to work well under pressure and interact in a professional manner with others.

    Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with assistance.

  • Able to spend considerable time standing, bending, twisting, and kneeling while building a variety of assemblies.

  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.

  • Able to grasp and forcefully grip to use tools.

  • Vision abilities required include close, distance, color, depth, and ability to adjust focus; able to use a microscope.

  • Able to use a mechanical crane for heavier objects.

    Work Environment:

  • Typical low volume production environment.

  • General knowledge of clean room process and practices.

  • High urgency and stress associated with customer deadlines.

  • Travel to customer sites is a possibility.

  • Willing and able to work extended hours when necessary.

    In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $52,700 - $70,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
