Job Description:

We are seeking a Tool and Die Shop Lead to join our facility in Redmond, Washington (Seattle area). This is a non-Union, day shift, hourly position. Candidates must be willing and available to work other shifts or overtime as needed to meet delivery schedules.

In our Redmond, WA, site (Seattle area), we fabricate, assemble, and test chemical and electric thrusters, as well as small scale propulsion systems. Our electric and chemical propulsion systems enable a wide variety of missions from the exploration of our solar system to global communication and the surveillance of severe weather and wild fires.

Essential Functions:

  • Set up, manage, and maintain a small (approximately 500 square foot) prototype and tooling machine shop and inspection area, containing several manual lathe and milling machines as well as various support equipment. Ensure tool machine shop is maintained in a clean and orderly state at all times. Organize incoming work orders and process them in order of receipt or as directed by Engineering.

  • Order cutters, consumables, and inspection equipment on an ongoing basis as required to ensure shop area is outfitted to support fabrication of machined parts. Budget will be provided for this activity.

  • Read and interpret information from planning documents, drawings, tool orders, blueprints, sketches, specifications, engineering orders and quality assurance manuals to determine the methods and sequence of operations necessary to completely fabricate and assemble all types and sizes of tools, molds, jigs, dies and fixtures.

  • Lay out details, dimensions and tooling points of parts, tools, molds, jigs, dies and fixtures preparatory to fabrication operations using shop mathematics, geometry and trigonometry.

  • Set up and operate hand tools and power machine tools, including manual and NC mills and lathes.

  • Fabricate, assemble and proof a variety of molds, jigs, fixtures, tools and dies, inspection check fixtures and tools, to required configuration. Parts may have close and exacting dimensions, and tolerances. Examples of typical parts include inspection gages, handling and assembly fixtures, pressure and leak testing fixtures, and fixtures incorporating indexing principles. Typical materials include mostly stainless steel, aluminum, and engineered plastics as well as occasional exotic materials such as magnesium or ceramics.

  • Fabricate and inspect small machined parts and weld samples for adjacent test facility to limited dimension drawings and engineering sketches.

  • Check work in progress and complete parts, using precision measuring devices, for adherence to specified configuration, dimensions, tolerances and finish.

  • Record manufacturing data in computer-based work tracking / ERP system.

    Qualifications:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience

    Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • 5 years of machining experience or equivalent tool and die maker experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret information from engineering documents, drawings, blueprints, engineering models and conceptual designs

  • Interpreting Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T).

  • Knowledge of machining theory, mechanical systems, welding and assembly to layout.

  • Ability to fabricate and build various types of tooling.

  • Understanding of tolerance stack up and datum structures.

  • Excellent math skills.

  • Experience working with jigs, fixtures, inspection check fixtures and tooling dies.

  • Proven safety record and understanding of factory processes, safety rules and requirements.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a team environment, work independently, and embrace continuous improvement.

    In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $23.32/hr MIN - $43.51/hr MAX. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
